Weekly Wrap-Up — Week 4

This week has been full, varied, and quietly powerful — the kind that reminds me how many different worlds this work touches, and how connected they all are.
Being the 4th week of the year, we have finally managed to plough through the accounts, training and strategic planning, so we could enjoy a week of interacting and activities.
The weather has been kind to us, though the coastal zone itself has taken a persistent battering, making access to the water impossible but the beach was accessible at low tide. The tide was quite low this week following the new moon on January the 18th.
We began with Seaham High Careers Day

We feel privileged to be invited to help guide the Seaham learners in the possibilities for their futures. Surrounded by so many young people imagining futures that blend science and creativity to the ocean. We host a stall that takes everything from physics to biology, engineering and ecology and shines an oceanic light on it. Our aim, to encourage these young learners to imagine a life that is at one with the sea, where exploration and engineering meets excitement and exhilaration. Their questions, their energy, their honesty — it all fuels our bigger mission.
Guardians Of the Coast — “Where Did All the Sand Go?”

We hosted two sessions on the beach, turning over stones, stories, and ideas. We talked about the transient sands, the recent aggressive wave action and the barnacle belt. The Guardians found heart‑shaped objects everywhere — sea glass, pebbles, patterns in the rocks — and it felt like the coastline was speaking back, a quiet thank you for paying attention, caring and learning. Those moments of connection touch our hearts. Dates for the year will be released on our website and on Eventbrite soon
L&G Open Water Swim — putting in the ground work
Not a beach session this time, but still a morning of progress. Building on last week’s conversations, shaping what comes next, and keeping the momentum steady. Next week takes us to the H3O Beach Sauna at Sunderland Yacht Club for deeper chats about possible partnership working and how our offers can complement each other. So exciting, and I am so impatient.

A day out with NERN and their Marine Rewilders
The week closed at South Gare, the Teesmouth Seal Rescue and Coastal Conservation Centre — a project still in its infancy, but so full of potential and energy. They’re creating space for seals to recuperate and actively seeking funding to build out the facilities inside the shelter. Standing there, listening to the team, watching the landscape breathe… It’s a reminder of how early‑stage work can hold enormous promise.

A Birthday Celebration at the Seafood Temple
A pause in the middle of the whirlwind for some good food, good company. Family time is often lacking as a swimming teacher. That all-important time between school finishing and dinner feels more like a vacuum of "fend for yourself". They love that responsibility now that they are all grown up, but fun nights at the river are briefly on hold. So it was very important that we managed to grab some time together to celebrate the personal milestones and share in the professional ones over some fantastic fish and chips.

A Little Bit Just for me:
Cold-Water Practice — Garden Edition
My dipping tub is earning its keep as I build my tolerance for a joint birthday dip at Pool Bridge Farm lakes and saunas with my very best Mer‑Mates. Slow, steady, joyful preparation.

Just 5minutes
It's never a long sit, when I try to sit and be present. It seems something I am totally unable to do. However, I tried, the sea was so magnificent and the bench dedicated to my mum and dad is such a great spot to sit and reflect on them, life and the ocean.
